Born at Fontainebleau, the third son of henry IV and marie de' medici, and brother of louis x III, Gaston, count d'Eu, duke d'orléans was best known for his bloody, incessant, and unsuccessful intrigues first against Cardinal Richelieu, and then against Cardinal mazarin. Lacking character but not culture, he became lieutenant general of the kingdom after the death of King Louis x III and placed himself at the head of the fronde against Mazarin. But he soon destroyed his friends and supporters and came to terms with the court. in 1652, Mazarin exiled him to Blois, where he spent his last years. From his first marriage to Mme de montpensier, he had a daughter, anne louise of ORLÉANS, DUCHESS OF MONTPENSIER, who was known as La Grande Madamoiselle.
